During the school holidays Roslyn Primary School received a SWEP leak alert after the system detected water use of over 1,600 litres per hour. The volume was close to four times the school’s peak daytime use. While there were no visible signs of water loss, the school was able to use SWEP’s data to uncover the source. The leak began at the same time as the overnight irrigation system and matched the irrigation volume indicating that the irrigation system might be faulty.
A plumber quickly identified and fixed a broken valve in the underground irrigation tank, avoiding wasted time and unnecessary checks.
The fast repair saved 2.36 million litres of water and more than $5,700 in avoided water bill costs. SWEP’s monitoring turned what could have been a costly mystery into a quick win for the school and the environment. School principal Mary Hutchison said the program had a range of benefits.
“Our water efficiency program has not only helped us significantly reduce our environmental footprint, but it’s also delivered real financial savings.
“These savings have allowed us to reinvest in vital areas such as classroom resources, student wellbeing initiatives, and our swimming program - enhancing the overall learning experience for our students.
